Why are attitude–behaviour inconsistencies uncomfortable? Using motivational theories to explore individual differences in dissonance arousal and motivation to compensate

چکیده
Using cognitive dissonance theories and selfdetermination theory, we explored the role of individual differences in global and contextual motivational orientations on dissonance arousal processes following spontaneous attitude–behaviour inconsistencies (ABIs). Study 1 (N = 382) showed that individual differences in global motivation relate to the frequency of ABIs and dissonance arousal across important life domains. Studies 2 (N = 282) and 3 (N = 202) showed that individual differences in contextual motivation toward the environment predict the relative frequency of ABIs and the quantity and quality of proximal motivation to compensate for ABIs in that context. Autonomous motivation was associated with a tendency to compensate for ABIs to both reduce dissonance and restore self-integrity. Controlled motivation disposed individuals to reduce dissonance to protect ego-invested self-structures, and to be indifferent to non self-threatening ABIs. Amotivation left people indifferent to ABIs. Individual differences in motivational orientations could explain why ABIs are uncomfortable and motivate people to compensate differently when they face ABIs.

Predicting individual differences in the choice of strategy to compensate for attitude-behaviour inconsistencies in the environmental domain
This research examined how people resolve inconsistencies between their pro-environmental attitudes and their counter-environmental actions. Using the action-based model and self-determination theory, we hypothesized that people use either behaviour modification (BM; e.g., counter-balancing the impact of counter-environmental actions) or cognitive restructuring (CR; e.g., trivializing pro-envir...
متن کاملMisattribution of Dissonance and Behaviour-Consistent Attitude Change
Dissonance theorists have speculated that people who have misattributed dissonance arousal to an external .source may come to question the appropriateness of this attribution. Moreover, they may then be motivated to alter their attitudes. The current study tested this latter notion by having an experimenter discredit the plausibility of an external source after misattribution had presumably occ...
متن کاملPublic Schools and Private Language Institutes: Any Differences in Students’ L2 Motivational Self System?
To enrich our understanding of the attitudinal/motivational basis of foreign language learning at junior high school level, this study investigated the students’ status of L2 motivation, the relationship between motivational factors, and the possibility of predicting their motivated learning behavior in light of Dörnyei’s (2005, 2009) theory of L2 Motivational Self System. To this end, 1462 jun...

The present study probed 409 Iranian English as foreign language (EFL) learners' motivation and attitude toward English as an International Language (EIL) by investigating the causal relationships of their facets via Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). To do so, the Persian version of the ‘attitudes toward EIL’ scale was designed and validated. It measures five constructs of: cultural realism, ...
متن کاملDissonance and Self-perception: An integrative View of Each Theory’s Proper Domain of Application
The literature concerning the controversy between dissonance and selfperception theories is reviewed. It is proposed that the two theories be regarded not as “competing” formulations but as complementary ones and, furthermore, that each theory is applicable only to its own specialized domain. Self-perception theory, it is suggested, accurately characterizes attitude change phenomena in the cont...
